Burpee Home Gardens "Grow Anywhere Tour" Stops at Briarcliff Elementary
On April 25, the Burpee Grow Anywhere Tour truck delivered fresh produce, vegetable plants and gardening support materials to students, parents and community members. The Briarcliff community was rewarded with 450 vegetable plants and 1,300 pounds of produce for winning an online voting contest. The school also received 50 vegetable plants for their Veggie Patch along with gardening tools and supplies. This year, more than 1.25 million votes were cast on Facebook, and Briarcliff Elementary dominated the contest with more than 480,000 votes!
This national truck tour stopped at 23 cities across the United States to encourage urban gardening and healthy eating. Through demonstrations and educational materials, Burpee Home Gardens is helping communities explore the basics of urban gardening, including small spaces, balconies and back patios. KCTV5 interviewed Briarcliff Principal Kate Place who talked about the success of their Veggie Patch and how it meets the nutritional and educational needs of students. She also discussed how local residents receiving free produce and vegetable plants will help the community.
Thank you to everyone who voted endless amount of time for Briarcliff Elementary to be the lucky winner in Kansas City! Despite the rainy weather, we had a terrific turnout and everyone who showed up left with a bag full of produce and vegetable plants.
